HOW TO APPLY!

Since this hands-on adventure isn’t for everyone, we’ve created an application process to help ensure it’s the right fit. And you are always welcome to reach out to us before applying

  1. Submit an Application
Begin by completing our application form to give us a better sense of your goals, experience, and any initial questions you may have as well as allowing us to evaluate your fitness for this adventure.

  2. Schedule a Call
Next, we’ll schedule a call—video is highly preferred—to discuss your application, answer questions, and ensure you have a clear understanding of what to expect on board. In most cases, we will accept your application on this call.

  3. Confirm Your Spot
Upon acceptance, you’ll have 5 days to secure your spot with a $500 refundable deposit. You will then receive initial educational materials, sea-bag lists, travel details as well as cultural and environmental reading material. We also HIGHLY recommend obtaining travel insurance at this point through DAN Boater.

  4. Make final Payment

Final payment is due 90 days prior to departure. At this milestone, all payments become nonrefundable. If you are signing up within 90 days of departure, full payment will secure your berth.

How to Prepare for Your Koru Expeditions Journey

Getting ready for an immersive, hands-on sailing expedition is all about being prepared, both practically and mentally. Here’s how to ensure you’re set for a rewarding experience:

Seabag List

“Less is more” is our theme. Packing for a sailing expedition is all about essentials. We’ll provide a detailed seabag list, but plan to bring only the necessities, as space aboard Koru is limited. You will have space for one 60L duffle and one 18L backpack Remember, lightweight and quick-drying clothing is your best friend on the water.

Travel to and from the Dock

We’ll provide directions to our dock location and details on local transportation options, including airports, trains, or parking recommendations, depending on your travel needs. For all legs, we insist on:

  • Arriving 24 hours prior to departure.

  • The evening before we will organize a meet and greet/safety briefing with all new crew members. This is mandatory and will cover topics like weather, itinerary updates, etc.

  • We will arrive at our final destination 24 hours before the official end of our journey and you will be able to stay onboard until noon if you wish. We HIGHLY recommend staying one evening locally in most ports of call.

Seasickness Prevention

While seasickness can and will affect even the most seasoned sailors, there are ways to reduce its impact. If a crew member is unable to participate, it has an impact on safety for all. Please, take seasickness preparation seriously. We will provide many more details as your expedition date approaches.

Mindset

Approaching this adventure with the right mindset will be your greatest asset. This is a hands-on, team-based experience where you’ll engage in daily tasks, build new skills, and face challenges together. An open mind, a sense of humor, and a willingness to learn will make this journey truly unforgettable. Embrace every part of the process—even the unexpected—and you’ll gain both confidence and skills that last a lifetime.
